High school girls basketball: CIF Southern Section playoff results — Mater Dei wins thriller over Centennial - OFFICIAL
All eight Open teams advance to the Southern California Regional, which takes place June 14-19.
Southern Section Girls Basketball Championships
OPEN
The 2021 Southern Section girls basketball season was memorable even before the Open Division championship game on Thursday night. But second-seed Mater Dei's thrilling 83-80 overtime win at top seed Centennial made it memorable for all the right reasons.
Nalani White drilled a wide-open 3-pointer from the right wing at the buzzer lifting the Monarchs to a fantastic victory in a game that lived up to all the hype between undefeated teams.
A putback gave Centennial a 78-77 lead with 50 seconds left, a three-pointer by the Monarchs' Alyssa Durazo-Frescas 10 seconds left gave them an 80-78 lead before the Huskies tied it 10 seconds later.
Rather than call timeout, legendary coach Kevin Kiernan decided to let his girls work the ball around. Centennial covered tenaciously and paid particularly attention to Stanford bound Brooke Demetre , who had 32 points. As the clock approached five seconds, Demetre had the ball near the top of the key but found White all alone.
The 5-foot-11 junior took her time, took a dribble and drained the game-winner finishing off one of 10 division title games Thursday. Mater Dei improved to 20-0, while Centennial dropped to 22-1. The Huskies have a shot at redemption in next week's Southern California regional.
Both teams won their pools to advance to the final.
The Monarchs edged Etiwanda (64-56), Lynwood (78-70) and
Harvard-Westlake (61-56) to win Pool B. Centennial used its high-octane
offense to breeze to Pool A wins over West Torrance (100-68), Windward
(97-71) and Orangewood Academy (92-56).
The
Huskies were actually held below their state state-best 83.9 points per game average. They are led by the
duo of senior guard Jayda Curry (21.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.2 assists,
4.0 steals per game) and junior guard Londynn Jones (21.3 points per
game).
Mater Dei have been led all season by the duo of 5-9 point guard Durazo-Frescas (17.5 ppg) and 6-3 senior Demetre (16.7 ppg).
All of California's basketball seasons were pushed back at least five months due to the pandemic. For a second straight year, the CIF State Championships were cancelled, but five of the 10 sections held championships, including all four in the South.

The NFHS Network, the leader in streaming live and on-demand high school sports, is offering two free Pixellot automated-production units for schools.
The Tuesday announcement is in response to the fallout from COVID-19 and the fact fans might not be allowed to attend many live high school sporting events in the 2020-21 season.
"We recognize that the next several years will be challenging for our high schools and state associations," said Mark Koski, CEO of the NFHS Network. "Many are facing budget cuts and reduced resources, and attendance at athletic and other school events may be restricted.
"From the NFHS Network's inception seven years ago, we have been driven by the goal to create a platform that showcases every high school event across every sport and every level of competition. Consistent with this goal, we want the High School Support Program to demonstrate our continued commitment to help our partner schools manage through the inevitable complications created by COVID-19."

North Carolina high school football: Schedule, scores for NCHSAA state championship games - OFFICIAL
The North Carolina High School Athletic Association will host eight football state championship games featuring 10 undefeated teams beginning Thursday at the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University.
Four title games — 1A, 2AA, 3A, 4AA — will be hosted at North Carolina State's Finley Stadium starting Thursday with the 2AA contest between Salisbury (8-2) and St. Pauls (8-0). It concludes Saturday with the 4AA tilt between Rolesville (9-0) and the state's No. 1 ranked team, Zebulon B. Vance (9-1).
The other four championship games — 1AA, 2A, 3AA, 4A — will be played at North Carolina's Kenan Stadium, starting Thursday with the 3AA contest between a pair of 10-0 squads, Mount Tabor and Cleveland. Two Saturday games finish off the championships, concluding with the 2A game between Mountain Heritage (7-1) and Reidsville (9-0).
In all, the 16 teams have combined for records of 140 wins and just eight defeats. All eight games with be broadcast on the NFHS Network.
The NCHSAA was one of 15 states to bypass traditional fall football
due to the pandemic. Of the 11 states that played football in the spring, only
three opted for playoffs and to crown state champions. Virginia did so
last week and North Carolina and Rhode Island wrap up football
championships for the 2020-21 season this week.
Among the many standouts in the championship games is Havelock senior running back Kamarro Edmonds, a 5-foot-11, 227 pound senior who has rushed for 916 yards and 15 touchdowns in eight games. He's ranked the No. 16 senior in the state by 247Sports and headed to North Carolina.
Also a basketball star who averaged over 30 points per game this year, Reidsville senior wide receiver Breon Pass is ranked the state No. 28 senior recruit overall after catching 83 passes for more than 1,400 yards and 27 touchdowns in his career heading into this season.
